Blood Tests

Do I need to fast before a blood test?

It depends on the test. Fasting (10‑12 hours) is required for glucose, lipid profile, liver and kidney function tests. However, tests like CBC and HbA1c do not require fasting. Always check the SMS reminder you receive upon booking.

Will taking a blood sample cause anaemia or weakness?

No. The amount drawn (5‑10 ml) is a tiny fraction of your total blood volume and is completely safe. After the draw, press the puncture site for 3‑5 minutes and drink some water – you will feel fine.

ECG

What precautions should I take before an ECG?

Avoid strenuous exercise, caffeine, alcohol, or smoking for at least 2 hours before the test. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your chest, wrists, and ankles. The test is painless and takes about 5 minutes.

Radiology (CT)

How much radiation does a CT scan give?

Modern multi‑slice CT uses very low doses – e.g., a head CT is equivalent to a long‑haul flight. The diagnostic benefit far outweighs the minimal risk.

What should I do before an abdominal CT?

For contrast‑enhanced abdominal CT, fast for 4‑6 hours. If you are diabetic and taking metformin, inform your doctor – you may need to stop it for 48 hours. Remove all metal objects before the exam.

Radiology (MRI)

Does an MRI have radiation? Is it safe?

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves – absolutely no ionising radiation. It is one of the safest imaging techniques, harmless even for pregnant women and children when clinically indicated.

I have claustrophobia – can I still have an MRI?

Yes. We use wide‑bore (70 cm) MRI machines. You can request an eye mask, music, or have a companion inside. If needed, your doctor may prescribe mild anxiolytics to help you relax during the scan.

Ultrasound

Why do I need a full bladder for pelvic ultrasound?

A full bladder acts as an acoustic window, pushing bowel loops away and allowing clear visualisation of the uterus, ovaries, prostate, and bladder wall. Drink 1‑1.5 litres of water 1 hour before the test, and hold your urine until the exam.

Is ultrasound harmful to the body?

No – ultrasound uses sound waves, no radiation. It is completely safe, even for repeated scans and for pregnant women.

X-Ray

Do I need to undress for an X‑ray?

You need to remove metallic items (necklaces, bra hooks, belts, keys) that may obscure the area. We provide gowns for you to change into – just follow the technician’s instructions.

I might be pregnant – can I still get an X‑ray?

Please inform our technician and doctor immediately if you are or might be pregnant. Unless urgent, we postpone the X‑ray. If it is essential, we use a lead apron to shield the abdomen to protect the baby.
